QEEG and Neuropsychological assessment

Before your treatment program begins your clinician must determine specific biomarkers of brain activity through a QEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalography) test. This ensures that any ongoing treatment recommended by your clinician is correctly applied, following the latest scientifically backed protocols.

The following video provides an overview of the QEEG and intake procedures at neuroCare clinics.

The Assessment

A strap will be fitted around your chest in order to register breathing rhythm. The patient is then asked to complete a questionnaire about how they are feeling. The therapist then measures the patient's head to determine the location of the electrodes. Some areas of the patient's scalp and face will be lightly scrubbed for the application of the electrodes.

A cap will then be applied to the head containing 26 electrodes. EEG, eye movements, muscle tone and heart rate can then be measured through the electrodes. The electrodes are filled with a salt mixture and are applied with special stickers.

Finally, at the middle and ring fingers a device is attached to measure skin perspiration. These preparations take about half an hour, after which the EEG recording will begin. Further instructions will be given on a computer screen and through a headset.

Tests will be conducted over an hour behind a computer screen using a button box. During testing it is very important that you are relaxed and comfortable. Muscle activity and stress can cause a lot of interference in the EEG signal.

For parents of children who are tested it is possible to participate during the preparation, and if necessary assist in the questionnaires.

The EEG recordings usually take around 90 minutes, after which the cap will be removed and the patient can relax.

After this part you will continue with the neuropsychological assessment as part of the test series. This is a computerised neuropsychological test battery that takes approximately one hour. During these tests, you sit alone in a room behind a touchscreen. Children may do so under supervision. Instructions will be given through headphones and touch screen. After the examination, your individual data is processed and sent to a database. Within one to two weeks the report is finished and treatment advice made by an experienced psychologist. Your practitioner will contact you to set an appointment for a discussion of the report.

If your neuroCare practitioner has scheduled you for QEEG assessment, please ensure you have followed the two steps below, prior to your assessment.
