What does Neurofeedback do in ADHD?
Usually, when we concentrate on a task the rapid activity (or beta activity) increases in certain parts of the brain. For people with ADHD/ADD, we often see a delay of brain waves (frontal theta or slow alpha peak frequency). Generally when a person focuses these brain waves are more active, but people with ADHD show the opposite: brain activity becomes slower therefore making it harder to concentrate. This may not be the case for all people with ADHD or ADD which is why it is important that a therapist carries out a comprehensive QEEG before starting Neurofeedback.
Neurofeedback is a method which directs feedback on specific brain waves (EEG). Through this method the brain is taught to produce or repress certain brain activity. Neurofeedback is a way to treat disorders such as ADHD, ADD and insomnia without the use of medication. Concentration and general behavior is improved in patients who undergo Neurofeedback as their attention spans increase.
One of the major benefits of Neurofeedback is that a positive and long-term outcome can be achieved after an average of 30 or 40 sessions, with little to no side-effects. Its effects are similar to the ongoing use of medication but without the side-effects of medication. For the treatment of ADHD or ADD, Neurofeedback has been successfully applied in clinical settings for more than 30 years and is an evidence-based and scientifically proven treatment method.
