Associate Professor Koethe is a consultant psychiatrist trained to diagnose and treat patients with early mental health disorders. She has a profound interest in psychotherapy and is an accredited supervisor in Systemic Family Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as well as a fully accredited psychotherapist in Dialectic Behavioural Therapy.



Professor Koethe is a psychiatrist broadly trained to diagnose and treat patients with early mental health disorders. She specialised in mood disorders and psychosis and has a special interest in stress-related disorders like personality disorders and PTSD.

Professor Koethe studied medicine at the University of Cologne, Germany, and the Medical College of Bangalore in India. She received her medical degree in 2000 and her doctoral degree in medicine in 2002, both from the University of Cologne, Germany. Subsequently, she started her training as a psychiatrist at the Max-Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany. Further, she returned to Cologne and completed her training as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, including working a full year in Neurology at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany. In 2006, she was board certified as both a psychiatrist and psychotherapist.

In 2007, she was appointed consultant psychiatrist at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the University of Cologne, Germany. In 2009, she moved to the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, as the Medical Head of the Centre of Excellence for Research in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.

After maternity leave, she restarted in 2011 as a senior consultant psychiatrist at the University of Heidelberg, where she continued full-time clinical work and picked up research work and teaching. At this time she started to deepen her interest in personality disorders and trauma. In 2014 she received her “venia legendi”, a PhD equivalent, enabling her to work as a professor of psychiatry and psychotherapy in Germany.

Professor Koethe has a profound interest in psychotherapy and is an accredited supervisor in Systemic Family Therapy (2011) and in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT; 2016), as well as a fully accredited psychotherapist in Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT; 2016).

In 2017, she moved to Australia and worked initially as a Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor at the University of Sydney and a Consultant Psychiatrist at RPA Hospital. In 2019, she became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

Professor Koethe is an internationally recognised psychiatric specialist and authored/co-authored more than 60 publications in high-profile journals in the field and several textbook and book chapters.
