Sydney, April 2, 2017
neuroCare's Dr. Mark Ryan was interviewed on 2UE radio's Healthy Living program on Sunday night, to talk about the benefits of personalised rTMS as a treatment for depression. Dr. Ross Walker, a leading cardiologist in Australia and TV/ radio personality (known as "the Good Doc"), introduced the segment by highlighting the risks and adverse effects of prescription medication in the treatment of Depression:
Dr. Mark Ryan who has been treating patients at the neuroCare clinic in Sydney, spoke about the evidence of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation as a treatment for Depression. He noted that "there are a range of studies done by a range of groups, including the neuroCare Group and Martijn Arns* in Europe, and the evidence is that it works for about 75 - 80% of patients."
As a practising Psychiatrist, Dr. Ryan compared the response of patients using antidepressants to patients who opted for TMS treatment, noting that around 3 or 4 out of 10 patients would typically respond (short-term) to antidepressants, whereas around 8 in 10 patients have responded (long-term) to neuroCare's protocol of personalised rTMS.
*The studies by Dr. Martijn Arns, referred to in this radio segment, show the evidence of neuroCare's protocol of personalising rTMS treatment by combining psychotherapy. For more information you can read our list of scientific publications on rTMS, Depression and personalised medicine, here.
You can catch Dr. Mark Ryan's interview at 17:00 minutes into the stream. neuroCare patient "Lynette" calls in to tell Dr. Ross about her treatment with neuroCare at 47:10 minutes.
What is personalised rTMS?
rTMS stands for repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and is effectively applied in the treatment of Depression and OCD when combined with psychotherapy. It is a non-invasive treatment where a pulsating magnetic field is positioned on the frontal region of the head to externally target specific areas of the brain. This improves the communication between regions of the brain involved in depression and long-term positive effects are achieved with the support of the therapist.Click here to find out more about rTMS
