Do you find it difficult to pay attention in class and you're moving around more than the other kids? Or do you find it hard to fall asleep at night?
Maybe Neurofeedback will help you!
Let's find out what Neurofeedback is...
What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a type of therapy that helps you to calm down, to pay better attention in school and to fall asleep quicker at night. You do this by training your brain to learn a special trick which helps you concentrate.
To do Neurofeedback you will visit a special clinic two or three times a week for maybe 2 to 3 months. BUT FIRST it is very important that we do a test called a QEEG. Here we make a sort of movie of your brain waves, so we can see what is happening in your brain.
What's a QEEG?
To do a QEEG (we say it like "kyew - eee - eee - gee") you have to wear a special cap on your head with studs and wires on it. These are electrodes that measure your brain waves. Then we will ask you to do some tasks with your brain so we can see what your brain waves do.
When we finish testing your brainwaves we will take the cap off and then you will go to another room to have some different tests (this is the fun part!) We will play some games with you to find out how quickly you can remember some words and numbers.
When we take the cap off there your hair might look a little funny because of all the goo left behind from the special "electrodes". When you go back home you can wash this out with shampoo and your hair will be back to normal!
You might have to wait a week or two so that the special clinic can have some time to look at your brain waves, you might visit the clinic again on another day to see a special therapist who will tell you and your Mum or Dad what sort of Neurofeedback therapy will work best for you.
What do I need to do in a Neurofeedback session?
After you have visited the therapist and your parents have decided on the best type of therapy for you, we can starting doing 'neurofeedback' the next time you come to visit us. Neurofeedback is a sort of training of your brain which you do with a special machine and a therapist will be there helping you. You will always have the same therapist looking after you each time you come in and normally you visit your therapist 2 or 3 times a week.
You will not need to have the special cap for the Neurofeedback session. Instead you have to have 3 to 7 colourful wires sticking to your head and they are called electrodes. You will have two wires, one behind each ear, and another wire stuck to another spot on your head. Sometimes you might have more wires stuck on your face. When the therapist has put the electrodes on properly you can start to see your brainwaves working on the computer! Yes, the computer can read your mind!
On the computer you play a game, but instead of using your fingers to press the buttons you use your brain! The therapist will also have a computer to look at to see your brain in action and if your brain finds the game too easy then the therapist might make it a little harder.
Training sessions can be hard in the beginning so you might get tired. But it is like when you learn a sport for the first time. When you practice a lot you get good at it really fast and you will be practicing 2 or 3 times a week so it will be easier and easier every time.
What do I learn from it?
The more you train your brain the more you might notice some things changing. You might find school easier and maybe you don't get into trouble so much because you are paying attention. You might also feel more relaxed as well because your brain might not feel so busy or noisy. You might find that you can go to sleep easier in the evening as well!
Maybe after having lots of Neurofeedback training you won't need to have any more medicines given to you by the doctor.
